Former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has been named Chairman of the Policy Committee of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The party says the move forms part of a wider restructuring process aimed at rebuilding and repositioning itself after the 2024 general elections.
The announcement came in a statement released by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, after a meeting of the National Executive Committee and National Council held on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
The party explained that the new committees will help improve internal governance, strengthen policy development, and coordinate political strategy ahead of future elections.
Many party members and political observers see Kojo Oppong Nkrumah’s appointment as a strong sign of his rising influence within the NPP.
They point to his active role in government communication, economic policy discussions, and parliamentary debates during the Akufo-Addo administration.
Before joining frontline politics, the Ofoase-Ayirebi MP built a solid career in the media as a broadcaster and lawyer.
He gained national attention as a radio host and current affairs analyst, where he became known for his clear communication style and focus on governance and development issues.
His move from media into politics marked one of the notable generational shifts within the NPP.
The party first elected him as Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi in the Eastern Region in 2016.
He quickly rose through government ranks and later served as Minister for Information, becoming one of the main spokespersons for the Akufo-Addo administration.
In that role, he defended government policies and led public communication during major national challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, economic pressures, and governance reforms.
He also served as Minister for Works and Housing, where he oversaw housing programmes, drainage systems, and urban development projects.
Within the NPP, leaders widely regard him as a key policy communicator and strategist who frequently represents the party on both national and international platforms.
Under the new Policy Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah will work with former Ghana Ambassador to South Korea, Dr. Kwasi Nyame-Baafi, who serves as Secretary.
He will also collaborate with members such as former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, Dr. Gideon Boako, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama, Dr. Antoinnette Tsibo-Darko, Dr. Jemima Nunoo, Dr. Mutaka Alolo, Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng, and Evron Rothchild Hughes.
The committee will play a key role in reviewing the NPP’s policy direction after its 2024 electoral loss. It will also develop alternative policy proposals to present to voters against the ruling government.
It will coordinate research, engage stakeholders, and manage communication on key national issues such as the economy, governance reforms, infrastructure development, youth employment, and social intervention programmes.
Political analysts say the appointment reflects the NPP’s strategy of combining experienced politicians with younger technocrats as the party works to rebuild trust and prepare for future elections.
The reorganisation also comes as senior figures within the party increase consultations ahead of possible internal contests and leadership ambitions toward the 2028 elections.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah’s growing role in the party has made him one of the influential figures shaping its future direction.
In its statement, the NPP expressed confidence that all newly appointed committee members will perform their duties effectively and help strengthen the party’s structures and political engagement.
