Breast sucking does not prevent breast cancer – Dr Kutin Mensah

Dr. Angela Kutin Mensah of Chrispod Hospital has debunked claims that breast sucking can protect women against breast cancer, advising couples to pay attention to unusual breast changes and seek medical evaluation when necessary.

She noted that partners could contribute to the early identification of possible breast abnormalities by being familiar with their partners’ bodies and noticing changes in the breasts.

Dr. Kutin Mensah made the observation during a breast cancer awareness and screening campaign organised by the Adunyame Foundation in collaboration with Hadassah Network Outreach.

She explained that men who are familiar with their partners’ bodies may notice warning signs such as lumps, changes in breast size and shape, or unusual fluid discharge, which should prompt further medical assessment.

According to her, such observations can help women identify potential problems early, even when the partner is not intentionally examining the breasts for abnormalities.

“It’s not about the sucking that can help. What can rather help is that since your partner knows your body best, he can rather touch or feel around your breasts. Even during foreplay or something, he’ll pick up that, oh, there’s a lump over here. Or one breast looks bigger than the other,” she explained.

She urged couples not to rely on breast sucking as a preventive measure against breast cancer but to take unusual changes seriously and consult qualified health professionals for proper assessment.

Dr. Kutin Mensah’s remarks highlight the importance of breast awareness and early medical evaluation in efforts to identify breast abnormalities that may require further investigation.
