Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has arrived in Cotonou to commence high-level stakeholder engagements as the Head of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission in anticipation of the presidential election in Benin, which is set for Sunday, April 12, 2026.

His mission, operating under the ECOWAS framework, aims to facilitate a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process that accurately reflects the will of the populace.

Leading a multidisciplinary delegation, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is supervising the deployment of 20 long-term observers, 80 short-term observers, and 25 young professionals who will be positioned throughout various regions of Benin to oversee the election.

The observation mission is directed by the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which requires observers to evaluate critical elements of the electoral process, including the technical execution of the polls, the impartiality of state institutions, and the overall political climate.

As per an update from ECOWAS, the presence of the mission is anticipated to act as a catalyst for fostering democratic governance, stability, and credibility in the electoral process throughout the region.

Akufo-Addo pledged to collaborate closely with authorities in Benin to ensure that the election is conducted in a manner that upholds democratic principles and enhances public trust in the results.
