GRIDCo probes cause of Akosombo substation fire

A fire at the Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region has prompted the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to launch a full investigation after the incident disrupted power supply to several parts of the country.

The fire, which occurred on Thursday, April 23, damaged key equipment at the facility, raising concerns about electricity transmission in affected areas.

Although the exact cause is still unknown, GRIDCo says initial assessments are underway to determine what triggered the fire and how much damage was caused.

In a statement, the company acknowledged that the outage has affected homes, businesses, and essential services, leading to intermittent power in some regions.

It noted that while such incidents are rare, they require swift technical action to protect the stability of the national grid.

The Akosombo Substation is a major hub in Ghana’s power network, distributing electricity from key generation sources across the country.

GRIDCo says engineers are working around the clock to contain the situation, isolate damaged components, and gradually restore power.

The company assured the public of its commitment to a stable and reliable power supply, adding that safety measures are being strictly followed.

Further updates will be provided as investigations continue and electricity is fully restored.
