Former Accra Mayor Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson has publicly endorsed Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for the party’s national chairmanship position.
The endorsement reportedly came during a meeting between the two party figures as part of Wontumi’s ongoing consultations with senior party officials and stakeholders ahead of the internal NPP leadership race.
Blankson, a former Mayor of Accra and current member of the Council of State, is said to have expressed confidence in Wontumi’s leadership abilities and his capacity to unify the party at the national level.
According to sources familiar with the meeting, Blankson praised Wontumi’s grassroots mobilisation strength and his long-standing role within the party’s regional structure.
He reportedly stated that the NPP needs a leader who understands both the grassroots base and the national structure of the party, describing Wontumi as someone who fits that requirement.
“The party at this moment needs unity, strong mobilisation and leadership that can connect with the base, and I believe you have those qualities,” he is quoted to have said during the engagement.
Chairman Wontumi, who has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman, is currently engaging former party executives, regional leaders, and elders as part of his campaign strategy.
He has consistently argued that the NPP requires renewed leadership focused on unity, discipline, and electoral strength ahead of future national elections.
The endorsement by Blankson adds to a growing list of senior party figures who have publicly or privately thrown their support behind various candidates ahead of the internal contest.
Wontumi has maintained that his bid is not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to strengthen and reposition the party.
The NPP is expected to open nominations for its national executive positions ahead of its internal elections, which are anticipated to be highly competitive and closely watched within political circles.
