Minority in parliament vows to oppose new taxes and levies

The Minority in Parliament has pledged to block any new taxes or levies introduced by the government.

The caucus argues that many Ghanaians already face severe economic pressure and cannot afford more financial burdens.

Members of the Minority shared their position during a media briefing by the parliamentary leadership on Friday, May 22, 2026, where they discussed key economic and governance concerns.

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei spoke for the caucus and accused the government of inconsistency in its taxation policies since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took office in January 2025.

She explained that although the Minority supports efforts to improve fiscal discipline and reduce government spending, the current measures have not brought the relief many citizens expected.

According to her, the government has introduced reforms aimed at cutting waste and improving economic management, but the implementation has moved slowly and has not made a noticeable difference in people’s daily lives.

She added that the current economic situation requires policies that reduce pressure on households and businesses instead of introducing new taxes that could worsen hardship.

“The Minority welcomes genuine efforts to cut waste, but reforms so far appear too slow and largely cosmetic. Ghanaians are taxed enough, and the Minority reiterates its firm position of no new taxes on an already burdened citizenry.

“It must be placed on record that the NDC, while in opposition, vehemently opposed some taxes, yet has introduced its own levies in government, which contradicts its promise,” she said.
