9 people trapped after mining pit collapses at Konongo

Nine miners have been trapped following the collapse of a mining pit at Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region, triggering an emergency rescue operation involving NADMO, the National Ambulance Service, and local rescue teams.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, evening while the miners were working underground at the site before portions of the pit suddenly caved in, blocking their exit route and trapping them beneath the debris.

The Asante Akyem Central Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Lanbon Joseph, later confirmed that all nine miners were still alive and maintaining communication with rescuers from underground.

Mr. Lanbon disclosed that emergency officials had established radio communication with the trapped miners and were monitoring the situation closely while efforts continued to safely bring them out.

“All nine miners are alive and safe,” he reportedly stated, adding that the miners were currently surviving on water they had carried into the pit before the collapse occurred.

According to him, response teams are working cautiously due to the unstable condition of the collapsed pit and the risk of further cave-ins during the rescue process.

Mr. Lanbon further appealed to residents and relatives of the trapped miners to remain calm while rescue operations continue.

He also confirmed that personnel from the National Ambulance Service had been stationed at the scene to provide immediate medical attention once the miners are successfully rescued.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as rescue operations continue at the Konongo site.
