Martínez clarifies Man United criticism, takes responsibility for struggles

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez has sought to clarify his recent comments about the club, insisting his criticism was driven by frustration and a strong desire to see the team compete for major honours.

The Argentine defender said his remarks after the match were made in the heat of the moment following a disappointing 2:0 loss to Atletico Madrid, stressing that his words reflected his passion for football and commitment to Manchester United.

Martínez explained that the club’s history and stature demand high standards, adding that he wants the team to have the ambition, quality and collective strength needed to compete at the highest level.

“Those who know me know how I live football, with passion, commitment and a huge desire to win. And when things don’t go our way, it hurts, especially when representing a club with the history and stature of Manchester United,” he said.

The defender emphasised that his call for improvement was not intended to single out individuals but to underline the responsibility shared by everyone at the club.

He also accepted that the players must take the lead in delivering better performances, placing himself among those who must do more to improve the team’s fortunes.

“I know that, first and foremost, it’s us, the players, who have to deliver, and I put myself at the front of that responsibility,” Martínez added.

Despite the frustration, he expressed confidence in his teammates, the manager and the wider club staff, urging them to remain united and committed to the task ahead.
