Strike still in force, stay home — GNAT to teachers

The Greater Accra leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has reaffirmed its support for the nationwide strike by the three teacher unions.

The unions have directed teachers to remain off duty, saying the strike will continue until the government addresses their outstanding concerns.

Speaking at a joint press briefing at the GNAT Greater Accra Regional Secretariat, GNAT Regional Secretary, Cosmos Ennu Kwaw, said the strike had become necessary because the government had not done enough to resolve the issues affecting teachers.

He said the main concerns include the automatic placement of teachers who have passed their promotion examinations, the completion of negotiations for a new collective agreement and the payment of a 20% deprived-area allowance.

“Teachers who sat for the prescribed promotion examinations and were declared as having passed the said examinations should, as has been the practice, be placed on their respective salary levels without any delay.”

Mr Kwaw also called on the government to implement an agreement reached on August 31, 2026, between the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and the teacher unions.

He said the agreement should be implemented fully and without any changes or conditions.

Mr Kwaw also urged all parties involved in negotiations for the new collective agreement to take the process seriously and work quickly to bring the discussions to an end.

The Greater Accra leadership has also warned teachers against returning to the classroom until further notice.

They said any new directive about the strike would be communicated through the official channels of the unions.

GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG declared the nationwide strike on September 25, 2026, over concerns about teachers’ conditions of service, promotion issues and the 20% deprived-area allowance.
