Defending champions Medeama SC moved to the top of the Ghana Premier League after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over 10-man Port City at the TnA Stadium on Wednesday, September 30.
The outstanding Matchday 2 fixture was decided by Kelvin Nkrumah’s stoppage-time strike at the end of the first half.
Both teams struggled to create clear opportunities during a cagey opening period, but Nkrumah broke the deadlock in the second minute of added time to give Medeama a crucial lead heading into the interval.
Port City returned from the break determined to find an equaliser but faced a disciplined Medeama defence that limited their attacking threat.
The visitors’ hopes of salvaging a point suffered another setback in the 66th minute when Ransford Lartey was shown a red card, leaving Port City with 10 players for the remainder of the match.
Medeama used their numerical advantage to control the closing stages and held on for all three points.
The victory takes the defending champions to eight points from their opening matches, level with FC Samartex but ahead on goal difference.
Port City, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat of the campaign and dropped to fifth place in the league standings.
