The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested five persons and recovered firearms, ammunition, suspected narcotics and cash during a special operation at the Tamale Aboabo Scrap Area.
The intelligence-led operation was carried out on Monday, September 21, 2026, by the Regional Special Operations Team, known as RED MARIA.
Police said the operation followed credible intelligence about suspected drug-related activities and other criminal operations taking place in the area.
The five suspects have been identified as Ibrahim Issahaku, 39; Mohamed John, 28; Mohamed Nawas, 25; Mohamed Osman Awal, 41; and Kwame Boateng, 28.
According to the Police Command, Mohamed John and Mohamed Nawas are suspected of using narcotic drugs, while Kwame Boateng is suspected of being involved in the sale of narcotics.
Mohamed Osman Awal, who is said to own the scrap business where the operation took place, is also accused of allegedly providing shelter for suspected drug dealers on the premises.
During a search of Ibrahim Issahaku’s residence, officers recovered two foreign-made pistols, two rounds of 9mm ammunition, a parcel of suspected Indian hemp and GH¢1,880 in cash.
Police also found GH¢18,825 hidden inside Kwame Boateng’s motorcycle. The money is suspected to be proceeds from the sale of narcotic drugs.
The operation further led to the seizure of 123 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, 12 sachets of 1mg Rohypnol, seven sachets of 250mg Tramadol and 111 wraps of suspected “ashes”.
Three motorbikes were also taken into police custody.
The suspects, together with the exhibits, have been handed over to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit (RDLEU) for further investigation and appropriate action.
