The popular Pink Flamingo Lounge at Laboma Beach has been demolished as the Post Flood Mitigation Taskforce steps up efforts to clear structures from the protected buffer zone of the Kpeshie Lagoon.
The demolition started in the early hours of Sunday, September 13, in the Laboma area of the La Dade-Kotopon Municipality. Several other structures within the protected zone have also been affected.
Authorities said the affected buildings are located within areas designated as buffer zones for the Kpeshie Lagoon and are therefore not allowed to remain there.
The exercise follows a directive issued on August 7 ordering the removal of structures built on waterways and within their buffer zones. The move forms part of wider efforts to tackle flooding and restore natural drainage channels across the Greater Accra Region.
The Kpeshie Lagoon and surrounding areas have faced growing pressure from development over the years. Environmental concerns have also been raised about the impact of buildings and other structures constructed within protected areas.
The demolition exercise is expected to continue as authorities clear other structures identified as being within the protected zone.
The exercise has attracted public attention because some of the affected businesses are well known, including the Pink Flamingo Lounge, which has been a popular spot along the Laboma beachfront.
