Bosnia and Herzegovina captain Edin Dzeko has announced his decision to retire from international football, bringing an end to an outstanding career with the national team that has lasted nearly two decades.
The 40-year-old striker will make his final appearance for Bosnia and Herzegovina on October 2, when they face Sweden in the UEFA Nations League. The match, scheduled to take place in Zenica, will mark his 152nd and final appearance for the country.
Dzeko leaves the national team as Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer. He has made 151 appearances and scored 73 goals since making his senior debut against Türkiye in June 2007.
His international career has been closely linked with some of the most important moments in Bosnian football. Dzeko played a key role as Bosnia and Herzegovina qualified for their first-ever World Cup in 2014.
He also helped the country reach the 2026 World Cup, making him part of both of the nation’s World Cup campaigns.
Announcing his decision, Dzeko reflected on the significance of representing his country and said wearing the national shirt had given him immense pride.
The veteran forward has become a national icon during his time with Bosnia and Herzegovina, combining goals, leadership and consistency throughout his international career.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina Football Federation has also paid tribute to Dzeko, describing him as one of the country’s greatest footballers and highlighting the lasting impact he has made on supporters both at home and around the world.
His final match against Sweden will therefore be more than a Nations League fixture. It will be an emotional farewell to a player who has represented Bosnia and Herzegovina with distinction for almost 20 years.
Dzeko will, however, continue his club career with German side Schalke 04 after stepping away from international football.
