Traditional leaders in Kasoa, Odupong Ofaakor and nearby communities have called on President John Dramani Mahama to remove the Awutu Senya East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Seth Serwonoo Banini.
The chiefs accused the MCE of incompetence and disrespect towards traditional authorities.
They made the call during the 2026 Awubia Festival in Kasoa, where they raised concerns about the management of the municipality and what they described as poor cooperation between the Municipal Assembly and traditional leaders.
According to the chiefs, the performance of the Assembly under Mr Banini has not met their expectations since he took office.
They referred to the municipality’s reported position in the latest ranking of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives in the Central Region, claiming that Awutu Senya East came last.
The traditional leaders also accused the MCE of interfering in chieftaincy matters and failing to show the necessary respect to traditional authorities.
They further expressed concern about comments they attributed to the MCE on traditional authorities and land ownership. According to them, the comments created a negative impression about chiefs and traditional land custodians.
Speaking to the media during the festival, the Boundary Chief of the Awutu Traditional Council, Nai Atopi, appealed to President Mahama and the Central Regional Minister to replace the MCE with someone who can work effectively with traditional leaders.
He said the chiefs no longer wanted Mr Banini to remain in office as MCE, claiming that his actions were affecting the fortunes of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kasoa.
Nai Atopi said the municipality needed an MCE who would respect traditional institutions and work closely with them to speed up development.
The Mankrado of the Odupong Ofaakor Stool, Nai Darko Ankrah, and the Odikro of Kasoa, Nai Saani Seidu, also expressed concern about what they described as attempts to use political power to intimidate traditional leaders.
They said political office holders must respect the independence and authority of traditional institutions and avoid actions that could weaken their role.
The traditional authorities called for better cooperation between the Municipal Assembly and traditional leaders. They stressed that mutual respect and teamwork were important for promoting development and maintaining peace in Kasoa and the wider Awutu Senya East Municipality.
