The Member of Parliament for Bosome-Freho, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, has filed a Right to Information (RTI) request asking the government to provide details of how much was spent on evacuating Ghanaians from South Africa.
Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, who is also the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Committee, wants the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide a full breakdown of the money spent on the exercise.
He is asking for details of the costs of flights, transportation, accommodation, consular services, staff expenses, reintegration support and relief items given to the evacuees.
The MP is also requesting financial documents to support the figures. These include invoices, receipts, payment vouchers, contracts, purchase orders, charter agreements and approvals for the various expenses.
He wants the Ministry to explain where the money for the evacuation came from and how much was taken from each source.
These sources include the Consolidated Fund, Contingency Fund, the Ministry’s 2026 budget, any supplementary funding, money held by the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria and contributions from private individuals or organisations.
Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh is also seeking information about all the evacuation flights. He wants the Ministry to provide the dates of the flights, the airlines or companies involved, the number of people transported and the cost of each flight.
The MP is further asking the Ministry to explain how the different services were procured and to provide the relevant contract or reference numbers.
He also wants details about the support given to evacuees after their return to Ghana. This includes transport fares and reintegration payments, the amount approved and actually paid to each person, the requirements for receiving the money, who approved the payments and the total number of people who benefited.
In addition, he is asking for a breakdown of the relief items given to the evacuees, including the quantities supplied, the cost of each item and the total amount spent.
Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh said he made the request in the public interest. He believes Parliament and the Ghanaian public should have access to clear information about how public funds were used for the evacuation exercise.
He has asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to respond within the period required by the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989).
