Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have approved all 14 proposed amendments to the party’s constitution at the ongoing National Delegates Conference in Kumasi.
The approval comes despite an earlier proposal by Acting National Chairman Joseph Danquah Smith to defer consideration of the amendments to a future conference.
Mr Smith had argued that the time available at the conference was insufficient for delegates to properly study the proposals while also participating in the election of new national executives.
The party, however, proceeded with the constitutional review at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, with all 14 motions presented by the Constitution Amendment Committee eventually receiving approval.
Among the key changes is a provision on who serves as leader of the NPP. The amendment reverses a clause introduced at the party’s January 31, 2026 conference, which designated the National Chairman as the party’s leader.
Under the newly approved arrangement, the party’s flagbearer will be recognised as its leader.
Delegates also approved changes to the election of Vice Chairpersons. Instead of all candidates contesting a common pool of votes and being ranked according to their results, aspirants will now declare the specific Vice Chairperson position they seek and contest it directly.
The amendments further provide for the appointment of three additional Vice Chairpersons who will not be elected.
Other approved changes include the creation of Deputy Communications Officer positions and the elevation of the IT Officer to an executive position.
Frank Davies, Chairman of the Constitution Amendment Committee, said the changes were intended to address gaps identified in the party’s previous constitutional amendments and improve its organisational structure.
The conference involves 7,163 delegates from Ghana’s 16 regions, with elections for nine national executive positions being conducted under the supervision of the Electoral Commission.
