Paul Afoko files nomination for NPP National Chairmanship today

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Awentami Afoko, is expected to arrive at the party’s headquarters in Accra today, Tuesday, August 25, 2026, to submit his completed nomination forms for the National Chairmanship race.

This process is a formal procedure that occurs within the party’s extended filing period and does not signify the commencement of his candidacy.

It will be recalled that Mr. Afoko publicly announced his intention to run in July 2026 and collected his nomination forms when the collection phase began on August 18.

The submission of these forms today is the next necessary step; presenting the completed documentation before the deadline, which the NPP’s National Officers Elections Committee has extended from August 27 to August 29 due to a surge of interest from candidates for various national positions within the party.

He is not contesting alone. Mr. Afoko’s campaign is centred around what he refers to as the “3R Agenda”: Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture.

He contends that the party’s most pressing priority is to mend internal rifts and restore its organisational framework prior to launching a campaign to reclaim the presidency in 2028, a message that holds personal significance for him.

Since announcing his candidacy, Mr. Afoko has engaged with delegates and grassroots supporters across multiple regions, positioning his campaign around themes of reconciliation and unity in preparation for the party’s 2028 effort to regain power following its electoral loss in 2024.

The filing on Tuesday officially places Mr. Afoko on the trajectory through the remainder of the NPP’s national officer election timeline: vetting will take place from August 31 to September 3, results are expected on September 5, appeals will be addressed on September 6–7, and delegates are set to cast their votes on October 3, 2026.
