Sergio Busquets returns to Barcelona as assistant coach

Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets has returned to the club in a new role, joining Barça Atlètic as assistant coach to Juliano Belletti as he begins his coaching career.

The former Spain international officially started his new position on Monday, August 17, 2026. Busquets will work closely with Belletti and contribute his experience and tactical knowledge to the development of young players at Barcelona’s reserve side while completing his coaching course.

The appointment marks an emotional return for Busquets, who came through Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy before breaking into the senior team in 2008.

He spent 15 seasons with the first team and became one of the most successful midfielders in the club’s history.

During his Barcelona career, Busquets made 722 appearances and won 32 trophies, including nine La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey trophies and three UEFA Champions League titles.

He also formed a famous midfield partnership with Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta during one of the club’s most successful periods.

Busquets left Barcelona in 2023 and continued his playing career with Inter Miami, where he spent two and a half seasons before retiring from professional football.

His return to the club now allows him to pass his knowledge to the next generation of Barcelona players.

His understanding of positioning, passing and reading the game is expected to be valuable to young midfielders coming through the club’s system.

He will work under Belletti, another former Barcelona player who scored the winning goal in the club’s 2006 Champions League final victory over Arsenal. Belletti has been in charge of Barça Atlètic since 2025.
