The Ankobeahene of the Tanoso Traditional Area, Nana Amoako Atta, has been arrested over alleged involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, near the Tano River in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region.
The chief was arrested by residents and youth on Sunday, August 16, 2026, after he was allegedly caught transporting sacks of mineral-bearing stones and sand from an illegal mining site to the palace.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, August 17, youth leader Abdul Razak Iddriss said residents had long suspected the traditional leader but lacked evidence.
“This arrest marks a major milestone in our local fight against illegal mining, which has polluted our iconic Tano River beyond recognition,” he said.
He explained that residents initially believed the chief was confiscating materials from illegal miners, but his alleged actions changed their perception.
The suspect was handed over to the police and later transferred to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Duayaw-Nkwanta to prevent possible interference. The Ahafo Regional Police Command has taken over the investigation.
Residents have urged authorities to allow the law to take its course, warning against attempts to settle the matter outside the formal justice system.
