Dennis “Miracles” Aboagye, a communicator for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed concern about his ability to freely share his opinions in Ghana, saying he no longer feels secure speaking publicly due to the potential consequences of his comments.
Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, August 5, Aboagye revealed that his concerns have become so serious that he has formally written to the Chief Justice to raise the matter.
According to him, the current atmosphere has made it increasingly difficult for people to express themselves without fear of repercussions.
He explained that although he is worried, remaining silent is not an option because public discussion and debate have always been an important part of his life.
“I enjoy talking and debating issues, so I cannot simply stop expressing my views,” he said, adding that speaking openly is part of who he is.
When asked whether he feared for his personal safety, Aboagye clarified that his main concern was not a threat to his life but the possibility that his outspoken nature could create legal or personal difficulties for him.
He said he believes his comments could easily attract unwanted attention, making him vulnerable to actions that could affect his personal and professional life.
Aboagye’s remarks come at a time when he is under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over allegations of financial misconduct involving approximately GH¢55 million.
As part of the ongoing investigation, EOCO has frozen his bank accounts. However, he has strongly denied any involvement in wrongdoing and maintains that he is innocent.
Despite the investigation, the NPP communicator insisted that the broader issue is the need to protect freedom of expression, which he described as one of Ghana’s greatest democratic achievements.
He argued that the ability of citizens to openly criticise leaders, share opinions, and participate in national discussions without fear is essential to preserving the country’s democratic values.
Aboagye stressed that safeguarding free speech is crucial for strengthening democracy and ensuring that every Ghanaian can express their views freely without intimidation or fear of being targeted.
