The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asante Akyem South Constituency has called on security agencies to explain the alleged arrest and whereabouts of its Constituency Communications Officer, Richard Nana Basoah, widely known as “Papa Rich”.
The party says it has not received any official communication regarding the reason for his arrest or the security agency responsible for his detention following an incident that reportedly occurred on Monday evening.
Speaking on Wednesday about the issue, August 5, the Deputy Constituency Secretary, Afoakwa Albert, said the party and Basoah’s family remained in the dark about his location more than a day after he was allegedly taken away.
According to Albert, the incident happened at about 6:20 p.m. shortly after Basoah had finished hosting a programme on Awenepa 95.5 FM in Juaso.
He claimed that three unidentified men approached the NPP communicator outside the radio station, forced him into a waiting vehicle and drove off without identifying themselves or explaining the reason for the action.
He said the men did not display any form of identification linking them to the police, National Security, the National Intelligence Authority (NIA), or any other state institution, raising concerns among party members and relatives.
Albert disclosed that the station manager and the constituency secretary promptly reported the incident to the Juaso Municipal Police Command, while the constituency leadership convened an emergency meeting to discuss the matter and determine the party’s next course of action.
He added that the party could not confirm whether Basoah’s work as a radio presenter or comments made on air had any connection to the incident, stressing that there was no evidence to support such claims.
Albert appealed to the Ghana Police Service, National Security and other relevant authorities to immediately provide information on Basoah’s whereabouts and condition.
He said the prolonged silence surrounding the incident had heightened anxiety among party supporters and family members.
The party maintains that every citizen is entitled to due process under the law and has urged the authorities to ensure transparency in handling the matter.
