Black Queens defender Josephine Bonsu has been named Player of the Match following her impressive performance in Ghana’s opening game of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Bonsu played a key role in Ghana’s 2-0 triumph over Cape Verde in their Group C encounter at the Moulay Rachid Stadium, delivering a commanding performance at the centre of defence.
The defender stood out throughout the game for her confidence, composure, and ability to read the game.
She made several important interceptions, won crucial battles against Cape Verde’s attackers and helped the Black Queens maintain a clean sheet in their opening fixture.
Although Ghana’s goals from Doris Boaduwaa and a Cape Verde own goal secured the three points, Bonsu’s defensive contribution was recognised as one of the major reasons behind the team’s successful start to the tournament.
Her ability to organise the backline and handle pressure from the opposition provided stability for Coach Kim Lars Björkegren’s side as the Black Queens controlled much of the match.
The award adds to an impressive individual showing for Bonsu, who continues to establish herself as an important figure in Ghana’s women’s national team setup.
The Black Queens began their WAFCON 2026 campaign in excellent fashion, dominating large portions of the game and showing strength in both attack and defence. The clean sheet also highlighted the team’s defensive discipline and preparation ahead of the tournament.
