If we don’t score, we can’t succeed- Jerome Opoku after loss to Colombia

Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku has said Ghana must improve its attacking play after the team’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The defender made the remarks after Ghana was knocked out in the Round of 32 following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia. Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute.

Playing in his first FIFA World Cup, Opoku impressed with another solid defensive performance. However, he admitted he was disappointed with the team’s inability to create and score more goals.

Speaking to Sporty TV after the match, he said:

“We can defend, defend but if we don’t get that one goal to relieve pressure off the defense, then it’s not possible [to win]. You just need that one goal to relieve the pressure.”

Opoku said he would not question the decisions of the coaching staff, insisting that his responsibility is to contribute as a player and support the team.

“I am not a coach so I will leave that to the coaches. I’m just trying to do my job, we are a team, we stick together” Opoku said.

The defeat ended Ghana’s World Cup campaign and also denied the Black Stars a place in the Round of 16, where they would have faced Switzerland.
