W/R: Police impound 700 vehicles over illegal sirens, beacon lights

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has seized approximately 700 vehicles in the Western Region and has removed unauthorized beacon and strobe lights, along with seven illegally installed sirens, during a targeted enforcement operation.

This initiative, conducted in Takoradi and Tarkwa, is part of the Police Service’s comprehensive enforcement of Regulations 65 and 74 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which prohibit the unauthorized use of sirens, beacon lights, and strobe lights on vehicles.

Speaking in an interview, the Director of Education, Research and Training at the Police MTTD, ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, who oversaw the operation, stated that the action was initiated due to the growing disregard for these regulations by certain motorists.

He clarified that the law allows the use of such equipment solely by the President, designated state officials, and authorized emergency service organizations.

ACP Obeng further cautioned chiefs, politicians, pastors, businesspeople, and other members of the public to refrain from installing and utilizing prohibited sirens and emergency lights on their vehicles, emphasizing that this practice poses a significant road safety hazard and contributes to traffic accidents.

“Henceforth, you will see the Police in Takoradi and in Tarkwa embark on this exercise on daily basis but remember this exercise is also being conducted across the country,” he added.
