The death toll from the collapse of a four-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie has increased to three, following the death of one of the two survivors who were rescued from the debris, as confirmed by the Mayor of Accra.
Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey provided the updated figure, indicating that among the deceased is the owner of a Mothercare shop that was operating within the collapsed edifice.
In total, four individuals were affected by the collapse when the building fell in the early hours of Sunday, June 7.
Initially, two were rescued alive and transported to the hospital, while two others were discovered deceased. One of the hospitalised victims has since passed away due to their injuries, raising the confirmed death toll to three.
The building, a four-storey structure believed to have been erected around 2020 or 2021, accommodated both residential and commercial tenants, including the Mothercare shop.
Prince Kas-Avotri, an engineer affiliated with the Ghana Institute of Engineering, revealed this information while addressing journalists at the site of Sunday’s collapse, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left two others hospitalised.
“From what we are hearing, it looks like the assembly has not given out any permit,” he said. “We are here to confirm that fully, but the building has no permit.”
Kas-Avotri elaborated on the importance of this discovery, a building erected without a permit indicates that no sanctioned architectural or engineering plans were in place to guide the construction.
“If a building has no permit, it means that there are no planned works signed by an architect, or a built environment specialist or an engineer for the construction to go on,” he said.
