Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reportedly been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra International Airport.
Senior figures within the NPP have confirmed the arrest.
In a Facebook post, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, alleged that EOCO officers, assisted by immigration officials, arrested Mr. Aboagye and took him into custody.
Mr. Kodua further claimed that Mr. Aboagye’s lawyers have been denied access to him and that his current whereabouts remain unknown. He also alleged that no charges have been filed against him.
He called on the authorities to immediately grant Mr. Aboagye unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of persons in custody.
The NPP General Secretary described the arrest as an act of intimidation rather than a lawful enforcement action, alleging that it forms part of a pattern of politically motivated arrests and detentions targeting members of the party.
Mr. Kodua also urged state institutions to remain independent and operate strictly within the law, warning against the use of public agencies for political purposes.
He appealed to NPP members to remain calm, act lawfully and stay united while the party seeks further information about the circumstances surrounding Mr. Aboagye’s arrest.
