The Ghana Police Service has appealed to the public to take part in a nationwide two-day clean-up exercise to help restore communities affected by recent floods and improve sanitation across the country.
President John Dramani Mahama directed the exercise as part of a national campaign to remove debris left behind by the floods and create cleaner, safer communities.
Police officers will join residents and other stakeholders in communities nationwide to carry out several sanitation activities.
They will clear rubbish and flood debris, desilt blocked drains, sweep streets, clean kerbs, remove sand and weeds from roads, fumigate affected areas, and clean markets, lorry parks, recreational parks, and other public spaces.
The Ghana Police Service encouraged everyone to work with its officers during the exercise, describing the campaign as “a shared responsibility to keep communities safe, healthy and clean.”
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) said Friday’s exercise will bring together the Assembly, security services, private institutions, educational institutions, waste management companies, and members of the public.
On Saturday, the exercise will move into neighbourhoods, where residents, volunteer groups, security agencies, and other stakeholders will lead clean-up activities in their respective communities.
The Assembly has also urged market leaders, transport unions, business associations, religious organisations, and community leaders to encourage their members to participate fully in the exercise.
