Ghanaians travelling to Sierra Leone to complete mandatory health declaration

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Ghanaians planning to travel to Sierra Leone to comply with a new mandatory health declaration requirement introduced by the Sierra Leonean government.

In a travel advisory issued on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the Ministry announced that Sierra Leone’s public health authorities have made it compulsory for all travelers entering or leaving the country to complete an online health declaration.

The policy took effect on June 18, 2026.

The new requirement applies to everyone travelling through Sierra Leone, including Ghanaian citizens, foreign nationals, returning residents and visitors.

According to the Ministry, travelers are required to complete the Health Declaration Form through Sierra Leone’s official Health Travel Portal within 72 hours before their journey.

They must also provide accurate and up-to-date travel information, including their seat number before departure.

After submitting the form, travelers are expected to keep the confirmation QR Code or Reference Number generated by the system, as it may be requested by immigration or public health officials during their trip.

The Ministry warned that providing false or misleading information could lead to delays, additional health screening, or even denial of entry into or departure from Sierra Leone.

It also encouraged anyone who develops symptoms of illness before, during or after travelling to immediately report to a Point of Entry Health Officer and seek medical attention.

According to the advisory, information collected through the online portal will be used to strengthen disease surveillance, support public health monitoring and enhance border health security.

The Ministry added that all personal information submitted would be handled confidentially in line with applicable data protection regulations.

Travelers arriving in Sierra Leone may also undergo health screening and any other public health measures considered necessary by the country’s authorities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has therefore urged all Ghanaians travelling to Sierra Leone to complete the online health declaration before departure to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure full compliance with the country’s latest public health regulations.
