Spanish giants Real Madrid have strongly condemned racist and xenophobic remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla against French forward Kylian Mbappé, describing the comments as unacceptable and incompatible with the values of sport.
In an official statement, the club expressed its “strongest rejection” of the senator’s comments, which were made following France’s victory over Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Real Madrid said the remarks were particularly disturbing because they came from an elected public official, stressing that political leaders have a responsibility to promote respect and unity rather than hatred.
“Our club firmly condemns such statements, which are unbecoming of a political representative,” the statement said.
The Spanish club also threw its full support behind Mbappé, praising him as a role model whose influence extends far beyond football.
Real Madrid noted that the French international inspires millions of people around the world, especially young fans, through his achievements on and off the pitch.
The club reiterated its commitment to promoting equality, inclusion and respect, insisting that racism, xenophobia and violence have no place in football or society.
“Football and sports are platforms for equality and solidarity,” the statement added. “Real Madrid will continue to work to ensure that racism, xenophobia and violence are eradicated forever.”
The statement comes as international condemnation continues to mount over Senator Amarilla’s comments.
The Government of Paraguay has already distanced itself from the lawmaker’s remarks, stating that they do not represent the country’s official position or the values of the Paraguayan people.
The Paraguayan Embassy in France also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to human rights, equality and the fight against discrimination.
The controversy erupted after France defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Mbappé scoring the winning goal.
The French captain later denounced the senator’s comments as racist, while the French Football Federation filed a legal complaint, prompting French authorities to open an investigation.
