Boy found dead in trotro after Accra flood disaster

A young boy has been found dead inside a commercial minibus, locally known as a trotro, in the Alajo area of Accra following the severe flooding caused by Monday’s heavy rains.

The vehicle was reportedly discovered lodged in a drainage channel after floodwaters subsided on Wednesday. Residents who approached the stranded minibus to inspect it made the tragic discovery of the boy’s lifeless body inside.

The identity of the victim has not yet been confirmed, and authorities are still investigating the circumstances that led to the incident. It remains unclear how the child ended up inside the vehicle or whether he became trapped during the floods.

The discovery comes as emergency services continue to assess the impact of one of the worst flooding incidents to hit parts of the Greater Accra Region in recent years.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak disclosed that at least 12 people had lost their lives due to the floods, while seven others were still unaccounted for as search efforts continued.

According to the Minister, the disaster affected more than 38,000 people across the country and forced 7,761 households from their homes.

Several communities experienced widespread destruction after hours of torrential rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems, causing rivers and gutters to overflow.

Many homes, businesses, roads and vehicles were submerged, leaving thousands of residents stranded and in need of assistance.

Disaster response teams, including officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), have been working around the clock to support affected communities and assess the extent of the damage.

The latest tragedy in Alajo adds to the growing death toll linked to the floods and underscores the dangers faced by residents during extreme weather events.

Authorities are continuing search and recovery operations while efforts are being made to identify victims, locate missing persons and provide relief to affected families.

Meanwhile, calls have intensified for improved drainage infrastructure and stronger flood prevention measures as residents and experts seek long-term solutions to Accra’s recurring flooding challenges.
