Bosomtwe MP condemns illegal mining activities around Lake Bosomtwe

Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has strongly condemned reports of illegal mining activities taking place around Lake Bosomtwe, describing the development as a serious threat to one of Ghana’s most important natural landmarks.

In a statement, the MP expressed concern over reports that illegal miners, commonly known as galamsey operators, may be carrying out activities in areas close to the lake, raising fears about potential environmental damage.

According to Dr. Adutwum, Lake Bosomtwe remains one of the constituency’s most valuable natural assets, serving as a source of livelihood for many residents while also attracting tourists from across Ghana and beyond.

“Lake Bosomtwe is one of our constituency’s greatest natural treasures. It supports livelihoods, attracts tourists, and is part of our identity. We cannot allow its beauty and environmental value to be destroyed by illegal mining,” he stated.

The MP said he has already engaged security agencies and other relevant authorities regarding the situation and that measures are being taken to halt any illegal mining operations and deal with individuals found to be involved.

Dr. Adutwum assured residents that he would continue to closely monitor developments and collaborate with stakeholders to safeguard the lake and its surrounding environment.

“I want to assure the people of Bosomtwe that I will continue to follow this matter closely and work with all stakeholders to protect Lake Bosomtwe for the benefit of present and future generations,” he said.

Lake Bosomtwe, located in the Ashanti Region, is Ghana’s only natural lake and is recognised for its ecological, cultural, and tourism significance.

Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that illegal mining activities near water bodies can lead to pollution, destruction of ecosystems, and long-term environmental damage.

Recent research shows that the Lake’s water volume keeps going down as a result of forest destruction around the lake.

Dr. Adutwum also called on residents and the general public to support efforts aimed at protecting the environment by reporting suspicious activities and promoting responsible use of natural resources.

He emphasised that preserving Lake Bosomtwe is a shared responsibility and urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the lake remains safe and sustainable for future generations.
