The 2028 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for a united national effort to address Ghana’s perennial flooding problem, urging citizens to put aside political differences and work together to support victims and find lasting solutions.
His appeal comes in the aftermath of the devastating floods that swept through parts of the Greater Accra Region and other parts of the country, claiming lives, displacing thousands of residents and destroying homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
In a statement, the former Vice President expressed his deepest condolences to families who lost loved ones and sympathised with all those affected by the disaster.
“Flooding is a national problem. It is not an NDC problem or an NPP problem. It is a Ghana problem, and we must all come together to solve it,” Dr. Bawumia said.
He stressed that although successive governments have made efforts to address the challenge, a lasting solution would require the collective commitment of government, local authorities, engineers, planners, communities and individual citizens.
Dr. Bawumia also urged Ghanaians to adopt responsible environmental practices, including desisting from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and avoiding construction on waterways, noting that such activities contribute significantly to flooding.
Beyond the long-term solutions, he appealed to individuals, corporate organisations, religious bodies and civil society organisations to support victims with relief items and other humanitarian assistance.
“Everybody should do something. Myself, I will try and help in the small way I can with some of these relief items. But I think that we are a country, our people, our communities are in need, and we should all chip in to come and help them,” he added.
He said responding to the disaster should not be left to the government alone, emphasising that every Ghanaian has a role to play in helping affected families rebuild their lives.
Dr. Bawumia also commended emergency response agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service, for their rescue and relief operations in flood-affected communities.
He further urged residents to cooperate with emergency personnel and comply with safety directives as rescue, recovery and relief efforts continue.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the thousands of our people affected by the floods. My deepest sympathies go to those who have lost loved ones, properties, and those who have been displaced from their homes,” he said.
He also called on emergency responders to continue their efforts to reach stranded residents and provide assistance to vulnerable communities.
“I also urge the emergency services and all relevant authorities to do everything possible to reach those in need and assist them. We will get through this difficult time by caring for one another,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
