The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has deployed a sanitation truck to clear accumulated refuse at the entrance of the Kaneshie Market Complex in Accra, as part of ongoing efforts to improve hygiene and ease movement in the busy commercial area.
The exercise comes amid growing concerns from traders and commuters over waste buildup at the market entrance, which is one of the busiest trading and transport hubs in the capital.
The AMA sanitation team, supported by a refuse collection truck, was deployed to the area to evacuate heaps of rubbish and restore free access to the frontage of the market.
The operation also formed part of routine city-wide sanitation interventions aimed at improving public health and environmental cleanliness.
Officials say the exercise is part of broader efforts to ensure strict adherence to sanitation bylaws and prevent the recurrence of refuse accumulation in public spaces, particularly in high-traffic commercial zones.
Traders at the market expressed relief over the intervention but urged authorities to maintain consistent waste collection schedules to prevent a return of the unsanitary conditions.
The Kaneshie Market Complex remains one of Accra’s largest trading centres, serving thousands of traders and commuters daily, making sanitation management a recurring challenge for city authorities.
The AMA is expected to continue similar clean-up exercises across other parts of the metropolis as part of its sanitation and decongestion agenda.
