GSA gives mattress companies one month to recall substandard products

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has given several mattress manufacturers one month to recall their products from the market after shutting them down for producing mattresses that do not meet approved standards.

According to the Authority, investigations revealed that the affected companies used materials that had not been approved for mattress production. As a result, the GSA ordered them to remove all such products already in circulation.

Speaking to journalists, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the GSA, Clement Kubati, said the companies had received official notices and must comply within the deadline provided.

“What I can say for the mattresses for now is that we have written to all the mattress manufacturing companies that we have locked down to do a product recall. We’ve given them one month notice to do that,” he said.

Mr Kubati assured the public that the Authority continues to actively monitor the market to protect consumers from unsafe products. He stressed that the GSA remains focused on enforcing standards and ensuring manufacturers follow the required regulations.

“I am using this opportunity to send a signal to Ghanaians that we have not gone to sleep. We are still on the ground and we are monitoring. We promote trade to protect consumers,” he added.

The latest directive follows a joint enforcement operation conducted by the GSA and the Police SWAT Team on May 18 and 19, 2026, at Afienya and Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region.

During the exercise, officials closed down six companies for producing mattresses that failed to meet the required quality standards.

The GSA explained that the action formed part of an ongoing compliance process that began in October 2025. At the time, the Authority instructed the affected companies to suspend operations and correct several regulatory violations. However, the firms failed to address the concerns, leading to their eventual closure.

Further testing and inspections showed that the manufacturers had replaced approved mattress materials with polystyrene, a substance not permitted for that purpose.

The companies affected by the crackdown include Jin Yuan Jia Mattress Manufacturing Plant, Monda Ghana Mattresses, ZXZ Company Limited, Rockfoam Mattress, and 5A Home Company.

The GSA has warned that any company that fails to complete the recall within one month could face additional sanctions.
