NPP MP threatens to sue Afari Military Hospital’s contractor

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee and MP for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has announced plans to sue the contractor handling the Afari Military Hospital project.

He accused the contractor of creating contractual problems and attempting to increase the project’s cost far beyond the original agreement.

Dr. Afriyie said he has evidence to support his claims and intends to make it public next week.

He further stressed that he would approach the matter without political bias.

According to him, accountability should remain a priority regardless of which political party is in government.

“I am using your medium to sound this clearly to contractors. I am going to take this contractor on next week. I am not going to do NDC, NPP again on this issue. So long as it is the responsibility of government to see to the operation of Afari, I have done that job,” he stated.

The MP said he plans to expose what he believes is a pattern of unfair practices by some contractors.

He claimed that such actions often place a heavy financial burden on the country and undermine the proper use of public resources.

“I would want the good people of this country to know how contractors checkmates the people of Ghana and fleece us. We will name the contractor and shame the contractor,” he said.

Dr. Afriyie also alleged that the contractor had already received a significant amount of money for the project but is now requesting a much higher payment than originally agreed.

He argued that this raises serious questions about cost increases and accountability in public infrastructure projects.

The lawmaker maintained that his focus is solely on protecting public funds and ensuring transparency. He emphasised that political considerations would not influence his actions.

“He did one after the NPP was in power. They paid him in excess of about 21 million to the actual project cost of $180 million. He is now coming with an escalated amount of about $85 million. I am never going to politicise this. I am coming after the contractor,” he added.
