KATH doctors suspend strike after Otumfuo’s intervention

The Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) has called off its strike action, effective 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, after successful discussions with key stakeholders.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the association said the decision followed the intervention of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as well as efforts by the hospital’s Board, management, and other stakeholders who have shown commitment to resolving the issues that led to the strike.

“The Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) wishes to inform the general public that the industrial action embarked upon by its members has been suspended with effect from today, 9th June, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. This decision has been made following fruitful engagements and the timely intervention of His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“The Hospital Board, Management and other key stakeholders who have demonstrated commitment towards addressing the concerns that led to the industrial action,” the statement said.

KADA explained that although it is still seeking a complete resolution of the issues behind the strike, it also considered the impact the industrial action was having on patients and healthcare services.

The association said the welfare of patients and the broader public interest played a major role in its decision to suspend the strike while discussions continue.

The doctors also expressed appreciation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the hospital Board, management, and other stakeholders for helping to facilitate dialogue aimed at resolving the dispute.

KADA further thanked the National Executive Council and members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), as well as several health-sector unions and professional groups, for their support throughout the period of industrial action.

Among the groups acknowledged were the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, the Health Services Workers’ Union, the Emergency Medicine Society of Ghana, the Orthopaedic Association of Ghana, the Komfo Anokye Certified Registered Anaesthetist Association, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, and the Komfo Anokye Pharmacists Association.

The suspension of the strike brings an end to several days of disruption at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where healthcare services were affected, and many patients faced difficulties accessing medical care.

KADA says discussions with stakeholders will continue as efforts are made to address the outstanding issues that led to the industrial action.

The strike began after the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, following his announcement of the suspension of emergency services at the facility.
