Fifi Kwetey warns NDC members over desperation for power

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has warned party members and other political leaders against seeking leadership roles driven by personal ambition, cautioning that a desperate pursuit of power can result in ineffective governance and national deterioration.

During the 47th Anniversary Commemoration of the June 4 Uprising on Thursday, June 4, Fifi Kwetey urged those aspiring to leadership, especially within the NDC, to place the nation’s service above their individual political aspirations.

He emphasised that true leadership should arise from a sincere desire to serve, rather than from a personal quest for political authority.

He referenced former Presidents John Evans Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama as examples of leaders who did not aggressively seek power but answered the call to serve their country when needed.

In contrast, he criticised former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, asserting that an excessive personal ambition for the presidency can adversely impact governance.

“My plea to all people who are aspiring for leadership of our country, especially at the NDC, is to cut out the desperation. Cut out the selfishness. Cut out the thinking that this is about you,” he said.

He emphasised that political leadership should not be viewed as a personal right or an ambition to be chased at any cost.

“You must not orchestrate left, right and centre just because you want to become a leader. Leaders in this party emerge. This country needs leaders who truly love the country and not themselves,” he stated.

Fifi Kwetey further cautioned that when personal ambition becomes the primary motivation for seeking office, the wider interests of the nation are frequently jeopardised.

“People who are desperate and must be leaders by all means should not be encouraged because such desperation only leads to a nation going down. The destiny of our country is at stake,” he added.
