The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has temporarily stopped accepting new patients at its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre for 24 hours because the facility is overcrowded.
According to a statement from the hospital’s Public Affairs Unit, the A&E Centre has exceeded its capacity and cannot safely take in more emergency cases at the moment.
The hospital explained that its 37-bed emergency unit is currently caring for 61 admitted patients, while another 34 patients are still waiting for beds.
Management said the temporary suspension is necessary to reduce pressure on doctors and nurses and to ensure patients already receiving treatment get the care they need.
KATH has advised people who require emergency medical attention to visit other hospitals in the Ashanti Region while the situation is being addressed.
The hospital is also working with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate to redirect emergency cases to nearby health facilities and ease congestion at the centre.
Hospital officials said medical staff are working hard to manage the high number of patients, and emergency admissions will resume once conditions improve.
Management added that the situation is being monitored closely and reviewed regularly.
