BoG dismisses reports of planned sale of $260m Headquarters

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has strongly denied reports suggesting that it is considering the sale of its newly commissioned US$260 million headquarters, describing the claims as “false and misleading.”

In a statement issued, the Central Bank rejected media reports alleging that discussions were underway for a possible sale-and-leaseback arrangement involving the facility, known as “The Bank Square”.

“The Bank of Ghana categorically states that this report is false and misleading. The Bank is not considering, discussing, or planning the sale of its new headquarters,” the statement stressed.

According to the BoG, the new headquarters remains a strategic national asset designed to support the Bank’s operations and improve its ability to carry out its statutory mandate effectively.

The denial follows earlier reports by MyJoyOnline, citing unnamed sources who claimed that discussions were taking place within the government and the Central Bank over a possible disposal of the building to help improve the Bank’s financial position following recent losses.

The report further suggested that opinions within the Bank’s leadership were divided, with some board members allegedly opposing the proposal while others were said to support it. However, the BoG has dismissed the claims entirely.

“The Bank Square,” which was commissioned in November 2024 and became fully operational in September 2025, reportedly cost more than US$260 million to construct and has remained a subject of public debate due to its scale and cost.

The BoG warned that the circulation of unverified reports regarding its operations could undermine public confidence in Ghana’s financial system and create unnecessary uncertainty in the market.

The Central Bank, therefore, urged the public to rely only on official communications published through its verified channels, including statements from its Communications Department and notices issued by the Secretary to the Bank.
