Majority Chief Whip signals rapid move on LGBTQ bill

The Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, has indicated that Parliament could pass the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill by Friday if there is sufficient political consensus and commitment among lawmakers.

Speaking on the status of the proposed legislation, Dafeamekpor suggested that the bill could move through the remaining parliamentary processes quickly once it is prioritised for consideration on the floor of Parliament.

“We can pass it by Friday if the House decides to take it through the necessary stages,” he stated.

According to him, the bill already has substantial parliamentary backing, and what remains is procedural coordination and final debate before approval.

Dafeamekpor argued that Parliament has previously demonstrated the ability to fast-track legislation where there is urgency and broad agreement among members.

“If leadership agrees and members are ready, the processes can be concluded within a short time,” he added.

The proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bill, formally known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has remained one of the most debated pieces of legislation in Ghana in recent years.

The legislation proposes restrictions on LGBTQ+ advocacy, promotion, and activities, and also outlines penalties for persons found engaging in prohibited acts under the bill.

Dafeamekpor maintained that Parliament must reflect the values and sentiments of the Ghanaian public when dealing with such legislation.

“Parliament represents the people, and we cannot ignore the overwhelming views expressed by Ghanaians on this matter,” he said.

Parliamentary leadership is yet to officially announce when the bill will be scheduled for final consideration.
