A Yutong bus travelling from Mankessim towards Accra has been destroyed by fire after it burst into flames on the Mankessim–Accra highway in the Central Region.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, July 8, 2026, causing panic among passengers and other road users who witnessed the vehicle being consumed by the fire.
According to reports, the bus was carrying passengers to Accra when the driver noticed signs of a mechanical fault and quickly moved to stop the vehicle.
The passengers were immediately evacuated from the bus before the flames spread, preventing any casualties.
Eyewitnesses said thick smoke was seen coming from the vehicle before the fire intensified, destroying the bus and personal belongings of some passengers.
One passenger, who spoke to reporters, expressed relief that no life was lost.
“We thank God that everyone was able to come out safely. The fire started suddenly, and we had to move quickly before it got worse,” the passenger said.
Another eyewitness said efforts by some commuters and residents to control the fire proved unsuccessful due to the intensity of the flames.
“The fire was too strong. Within a short time, the whole bus had caught fire. We could only help the passengers get out and move away from the vehicle,” the eyewitness added.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were later called to the scene and managed to bring the situation under control.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, but preliminary indications suggest it may have resulted from a mechanical or electrical fault.
Authorities have urged commercial vehicle operators to conduct regular maintenance checks on their vehicles to prevent similar incidents and protect passengers on the roads.
