Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme produced a brilliant performance to win gold in the men’s 100m final at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, clocking 10.25 seconds in a highly competitive race at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
Eseme powered through the field in the closing stages to finish ahead of South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana and Nigeria’s Chidera Ezeakor, who both recorded 10.31 seconds to claim silver and bronze, respectively.
The race was one of the most exciting events of the championships, with several athletes separated by only hundredths of a second.
Ghana’s Joseph Paul Amoah narrowly missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in 10.32 seconds. Zimbabwe’s Tapiwanashe Makarawu placed fifth with the same time, while Ghanaian sprint star Abdul-Rasheed Saminu finished sixth, also clocking 10.32 seconds.
Ivory Coast’s Ismael Kone crossed the line in 10.37 seconds, while Simao finished eighth in 10.55 seconds.
There was a brief delay after the race as officials reviewed the final results because of the extremely close finish among the athletes.
The review increased tension inside the packed stadium as fans waited for confirmation of the final standings.
Eseme’s victory continues his impressive rise in African sprinting. The Cameroonian sprinter previously won gold in the men’s 100m at the 2023 African Games in Accra and also claimed silver at the 2024 African Championships in Douala.
