Asante Kotoko’s Communications Director, Lawyer Sarfo Duku, reveals the club’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) advised management not to appoint a new coach, not even temporarily, as they searched for a permanent replacement.
Speaking about the club’s current situation, Sarfo Duku explained that management’s hands have been tied since the IMC and the newly constituted board took over important decisions, including financial matters.
“The board advised us to hire no coach, not even a stopgap. From the day the board was announced, the IMC has not taken any key decision unilaterally. They said: ‘Hold on, we are hunting for a new coach,’” he said.
His comments come during a difficult season for the Porcupine Warriors, who have struggled for consistency in the Ghana Premier League. The club has undergone several coaching changes in recent months following the resignation of Abdul Karim Zito in February after the team’s painful FA Cup exit against Aduana FC.
After Zito’s departure, Prince Yaw Owusu was appointed interim coach, but he also stepped down later in the season. Youth team coach Hamza Obeng then took temporary charge of the team as Kotoko continued searching for stability on and off the pitch.
The IMC has been overseeing the club since the end of the 2022/23 season after the dissolution of the previous board. In February 2026, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, life patron of the club, appointed a new Board of Directors for the club, with businessman James Osei Brown named as chairman.
Despite the new appointments, the IMC was asked to continue handling the club’s daily operations until the end of the 2025/26 season.
Sarfo Duku admitted that the club’s technical problems are well known to the leadership. He stressed that management has not taken major decisions independently since the new board was introduced.
