One suspect collapses and dies as police arrest robbers in Bolgatanga

The Ghana Police Service has arrested four persons suspected of armed robbery following an intelligence-driven operation in Bolgatanga, situated in the Upper East Region.

The individuals have been identified as Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana, also referred to as Saaga, and Adu Yakubu.

They were taken into custody on May 5, 2026, in connection with a series of robbery incidents occurring in the Talensi District and certain areas of the North East Region.

According to police investigations, the suspects convened at Gbane, a mining community within the Talensi District, on May 4 after travelling from Yagaba and Fumbisi with the alleged intent to execute a robbery operation.

During the assault, they reportedly stole four motorbikes and numerous mobile phones from their victims.

In a statement, the police indicated that the suspects confessed during interrogation to multiple robbery incidents along the Yagaba-Fumbisi and Yagaba-Nanguruma roads.

The suspects also allegedly admitted to their participation in the robbery of the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga on March 22, 2025.

This incident attracted significant attention after a viral video depicted armed individuals brandishing an AK-47 assault rifle during the heist.

Investigators further disclosed that the suspects acknowledged their involvement in several attacks at mining sites in Gbane, where they purportedly absconded with gold and substantial amounts of money belonging to miners and residents.

The police reported that the suspects subsequently guided officers to a farm near Biung, adjacent to Gbane, where the gang leader, Amadu Rahman, had allegedly concealed an AK-47 rifle.

A search conducted at the site resulted in the recovery of the rifle, which bore the serial number 68100563, along with 87 rounds of live ammunition hidden within a fertiliser sack.

However, during the operation to recover the weapon, suspect Amadu Rahman reportedly collapsed. He was transported to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

His remains have since been placed in the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Meanwhile, the remaining three suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before the court to face prosecution.
