Three major pre-tertiary teacher unions in Ghana have declared a nationwide strike effective Friday, September 25, 2026, over what they describe as delays in addressing key concerns affecting teachers.
The unions are the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
The decision follows an earlier deadline issued to the government to resolve outstanding issues by midday on Thursday, September 24.
The unions had warned that they would no longer be able to restrain teachers if the concerns remained unresolved.
One of the major issues is the renewal of the teachers’ Collective Agreement, which the unions say has expired. They also say negotiations for a new agreement, which were expected to be completed by June 2026, remain outstanding.
The unions have also raised concerns over the placement of teachers who completed promotion examinations in December 2025 and February 2026.
They say some affected teachers have not been placed on their new salary scales and are owed arrears dating back to January 2026.
Another concern is the payment of the Deprived Area Allowance for teachers working in hard-to-reach areas.
The unions say the unresolved matters have increased frustration among teachers and prompted the latest industrial action.
In their statement, the union leaders described the delays as having created “disaffection, anger, and disillusionment” among members.
The strike is expected to affect teaching and learning in pre-tertiary schools across the country.
The unions have directed teachers to withdraw their services until their concerns are addressed by the government and relevant state agencies.
The latest action comes weeks after the unions received assurances that promotion placements would be completed by the end of September.
