The Korle Bu Doctors Association (KODA) says its members will embark on a strike starting today, May 4, 2026.
This decision comes after several talks with the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital failed to resolve long-standing problems.
Speaking on a radio programme, KODA’s secretary, Dr. Joojo Nyamekye-Baidoo, said the strike is a last option after many meetings and letters did not lead to any solution.
He explained that the main issue is that Laboratory Physicians have been left out of the hospital’s Central Laboratory. According to KODA, this has affected both patient care and the training of medical specialists.
He said doctors have not been allowed to use the facility for years, and some have even faced threats.
“Strike is the only option. I think we’ve engaged management enough, and I don’t think they have come back to us in good faith,” he lamented.
He also said the situation has caused problems in how the hospital operates, forcing it to depend on outside labs like the University of Ghana Medical School for tests and diagnoses.
Dr. Nyamekye-Baidoo explained that the strike will happen in stages. It will start with outpatient services and could later affect emergency and inpatient care if the issues are not resolved. He added that the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) supports their decision.
KODA is asking for Laboratory Physicians and trainees to be allowed back into the Central Laboratory.
They also want full access to clinical systems, fair leadership in lab departments, and proper checks on specialised test results.
In addition, they are calling for an investigation into alleged threats against their members.
The association has also rejected a plan to introduce a 24-hour specialist outpatient service.
They say such services already exist and warn that expanding it without adding more staff could overwork doctors and affect patient care.
