Only 3 transformers stolen in Tema, not 8 – ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has explained that only three transformers, not eight, have been stolen in its Tema area between 2024 and 2026.

Earlier reports had claimed that eight transformers were stolen within two quarters, with five taken at the end of 2025 and three more in early 2026. But ECG says that information is not correct.

During his interview on May 1 2026, the Tema Regional Manager of ECG, Emmanuel Ankomah, clarified that the real number is three over the past three years.

He also said that transformer theft has reduced a lot compared to previous years. According to him, this is because ECG has put in place stronger measures to protect them. For example, some transformers are now being welded in place so they cannot be easily removed.

Mr. Ankomah also asked the public to be alert in their communities. He advised people to always check and confirm that anyone working on a transformer is truly authorised by ECG.

He added that the company is doing its best to stop the thefts and make sure such incidents continue to decrease.
