FIFA president denied extra security in Vancouver visit

The President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino has come under public attention after reports that his security request during a visit to Canada was rejected by local authorities.

According to reports, Infantino requested a highly secured motorcade during his trip to Vancouver for an annual conference linked to FIFA. The request reportedly included permission for his convoy to run red lights, stop traffic, and move with an enhanced security escort.

If approved, the arrangement would have given him a level of road protection higher than what is usually provided to top political leaders, including the Prime Minister of Canada. The proposal, however, was not accepted.

The Vancouver Police Department rejected the request after reviewing its implications. Authorities cited concerns about the financial cost to taxpayers and the potential disruption to public life in the city.

Officials also expressed concern that approving such extraordinary measures could increase public frustration.

Canada is already preparing for major infrastructure and security spending ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

There has been ongoing debate in some communities about the rising costs associated with hosting the tournament.
