The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has instructed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside while authorities investigate a recent fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.
This decision follows a serious fire at the facility, which has disrupted power transmission and caused widespread outages across the country.
The blaze damaged important control systems at the Akosombo site and has contributed to the unstable electricity supply, leaving many parts of Ghana without power for long periods.
Investigators have already begun work to find out what caused the fire and to measure how much damage it did to key infrastructure.
By asking the GRIDCo CEO to step aside, the Minister aims to ensure the investigation remains fair, independent, and transparent.
At the same time, officials have made significant changes to the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.
These adjustments form part of a broader plan to improve efficiency and strengthen power distribution during this challenging period in the energy sector.
These events come as public concern continues to grow over the reliability of electricity. Both businesses and households are struggling to cope with the ongoing outages and their effects.
The Minister is expected to address the nation at a press briefing scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday. He will speak about the current situation, outline steps being taken to fix the problems, and explain measures aimed at stabilising the national grid.
The government has assured citizens that it remains committed to restoring steady electricity supply and tackling the root causes of these disruptions.
