Ghana begins repatriation of 327 citizens stranded in Côte d’Ivoire

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the Government of Ghana is in the process of repatriating 327 Ghanaian nationals who were affected by a mass demolition exercise in the Port Bouët Municipality in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

In a press release issued in Accra on Thursday, June 12, 2026, the Ministry explained that the affected citizens were living in areas targeted by the demolition exercise.

Many of them reportedly lost their homes and sources of income, leaving them stranded and unable to support themselves or secure alternative accommodation.

According to the statement, the government has already successfully brought back 228 of the affected Ghanaians. These returnees arrived safely in Ghana on Wednesday, June 11, 2026.

The remaining group of citizens is expected to return home on Thursday, June 12, 2026, as arrangements have already been completed to ensure their safe transport.

The Ministry noted that the government has provided buses and trucks free of charge to transport the returnees and their personal belongings from Côte d’Ivoire back to Ghana.

Officials say this is part of efforts to ensure a safe and dignified return process.

The statement also revealed that discussions are ongoing with Ivorian authorities regarding possible compensation for those affected by the demolition exercise.

The government said its diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue to engage relevant authorities to ensure that any promised support is delivered to the victims.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that the welfare and protection of Ghanaian citizens abroad remain a top priority for the government.

It added that further steps will be taken to support the reintegration of the returnees once they arrive in the country.

Government officials expressed appreciation to the authorities of Côte d’Ivoire for their cooperation during the repatriation process, as well as to all stakeholders involved in facilitating the operation.

The Ministry assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
